Bhubaneswar, May 27: With eight points, Nilsu Patnaik emerged as the top ranked player of Orissa in the Platinum (1699 to 1999 Elo rating points) category of KIIT International Chess festival here Wednesday.
After receiving his prize money of Rs 20,000 for finishing joint second, Nilsu said that he was happy with his show. “I promised my parents that I would do well this time. I think I have done that,” the gleeful boy said.
After winning the first three rounds, Nilsu lost to Soham Datar and he said that probably prevented him from finishing within the top two. “Soham is a very tough opponent. I tried my best to hold him to a draw, but in the end Soham stole the game with some tricky moves”, stated Nilsu.
The 13-year old however, has a bright future. With an Elo rating of 1,900 points, the boy is not far from achieving his first GM norm. “I need 600 more points to get my first GM norm. I am working very hard towards my goal and looking forward to playing quite a few tournaments this year,” Nilsu informed.
Nilsu who is a keen follower of Alexander Alekhine stated that the Russian inspires him a lot. “I have many books of him through which I learn his tactics. I like his attacking style and follow that. He is the best player the world has ever seen,” informed Nilsu.
Under the guidance of coach Ravindra Kumar Ojha, Nilsu is desperate to win more titles in future. “Ravi Sir is a very good coach. He guides me and never tries to pressurise. I have to win titles for him, otherwise his efforts will go to waste,” stated the chess wizkid stated.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Nishad, the boy who emerged top in the Platinum category, said this tournament is a new experience for him. “I participated here for the first time and I am totally amazed. I have played many tournaments in India but this is completely a new experience. Very happy to win the title in my maiden appearance,” stated the topper.
