Kendrapara, Jan 16: A robber slit the throat of a woman and robbed her of Rs 2 lakh and two gold necklaces at Badatubi village under Batighar panchayat here late Friday night.

A profusely bleeding Kalpana Mandal was rescued by family members and admitted to the Mahakalapara community health centre first. She was later shifted to the district headquarters hospital where the doctors conducted an operation. Kalpana required 20 stitches on her neck, doctors said.

The accused, identified as Raja Baij of the same village, fled the scene after the incident while police detained his father Bidhan Baij and brother Lakhsman Baij and questioned them in this connection.

Kalpana’s husband Krushnapada Mandal lodged a complaint with the police Saturday. The incident occurred when Krushnapada was away from the village Friday. Raja took advantage of Krushnapada’s absence and broke into his house at midnight. He woke up Kalpana and demanded money by brandishing a knife. When she refused, Raja slit her throat and fled with the cash and gold jewellery.
