Khuntutni: A devotee was bitten by a wild monkey at the Dhabalewsar temple here Wednesday. The victim was identified as Dinesh Parida, a resident of Bidanasi.
According to sources, Parida visited the famous shrine with his family. When they were in the temple premises, a wild monkey hopped onto Dinesh and bit his left leg, severely injuring him in the process. Alerted by his screams, some priests and youth reached the spot and rescued him by shooing away the monkey. Dhabaleswar Bit house in-charge Shankarshan Mishra said, “We have sent the victim to the district headquarter hospital in Cuttack for treatment”.
Troops of wild monkeys have reached the shrine during the last one month. Three devotees have suffered similar attacks in the last 15 days. Two among them were Ashish Behera of Nuabazar and Dipak Behera of Mancheswar village. Identity of the third victim is yet to be ascertained.
When enquired about the incident, district forest officer (DFO) Arun Kumar Swain said, “Acting on the direction of Cuttack sub-collector, we have provided an air gun and explosives to the forest staff. We will try to spot and tranquilise the rogue monkeys who were behind these attacks.”
