RRC, Sunrise seal spot in FAO final

Cuttack: Reigning champions Sunrise Club will meet Radha Raman Club (RRC) in the final of the FAO first division super league here Sunday. In the semifinals played Thursday at the Barabati Stadium here, Sunrise Club beat Sports Hostel, Cuttack 4-2 while RRC edged out Rising Student Club 2-1 in a hard-fought encounter courtesy a brace from Nigerian recruit Moses Obasi.

 Both Sunrise Club and Sports Hostel failed to score in the scheduled 90 minutes. Tie-breaker was implemented and Sunrise Club scored through Dinesh Lakra , Anil Deep , Sonu Khadia and C Prakash while Sunil Sardar and Sudam Oram were the scorers for Sports Hostel. The victory put Sunrise Club in the final for the fourth successive time.

In the other semifinal Obasi, who is having a wonderful tournament, opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a fine strike from just outside of the box. Arbind Lakra equalised for RSC five minutes from the break. However, Obasi got the winner three minutes into the second half.

Tame draw

East Coast Railway (ECoR) played out a drab goalless draw against Sports Hostel in a match of the FAO Women’s league here, Thursday.

Top teams advance

 Kandhamal defeated Gajapati 2-0 in the inaugural match to advance into the next round of the state level inter-school volleyball tournament here Thursday.

Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Jagatsinghapur, Puri, Ganjam, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Anugul, Koraput and Mayurbhanj are the other teams to also advance to the second round after winning their respective matches. Altogether 468 players from 41 teams along with 80 officials are participating in this two-day meet.

Team announced

Orissa Athletics Association (OAA) announced a 79-member Orissa team, including 41 boys and 38 girls for the 29th East Zone Junior Athletic Championships in Kolkata, September 17-18. The team departed for Kolkata, Thursday.

Rabi Nayak and Anuradha Biswal have been appointed as the managers of the team, while BC Guha and Rajkumari Patra will be at the helm as coaches. Meanwhile OAA official Prabodh Kumar Mohanty has been nominated by the Athletic Federation of India as the technical delegate for the tournament.

 Badminton tourney

In memory of former minister, late Nalini Kanta Mohanty, the Amateur Badminton Club (ABC), Bhubaneswar will organise the IVth Nalini Kanta Mohanty Memorial state open ranking badminton tournament at the East Coast Railway Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar, October 12-15.

The categories of competition will be the men’s singles and doubles, women singles, U-19 boys’ singles and doubles, U-17 boys’ singles and doubles, U-15 boys’ singles, mixed doubles and veterans (above 50) doubles.

The organisers informed in a release Thursday that they have got the necessary permission from the Orissa State Badminton Association. The total prize money in the event is Rs 2,50,000.
