Jharsuguda: Gold jewellery worth more than Rs 1 crore was allegedly stolen from a jewellery shop in the heart of Jharsuguda town after burglars broke through its rear wall late Friday night, prompting a major police investigation.
According to police, the burglars climbed onto the roof of nearby Tulsi Jewellers shop after about 1am. They allegedly used a cutting machine to break through the rear wall of Mangaspuriya Jewellers and entered the premises.
The burglars then stole gold ornaments worth more than Rs 1 crore that had been kept on display inside the shop before fleeing the area.
Silver articles kept in the shop were not taken though, according to the shop owner.
The burglars also allegedly took away the shop’s CCTV digital video recorder (DVR), apparently to prevent investigators from accessing footage that could help identify them.
Shop owner Praveen Agrawal said the exact value and quantity of the stolen jewellery were being assessed and that a formal complaint would be lodged with the police after the inventory was completed.
Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police Gundala Reddy Raghavendra is overseeing the investigation. A team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Umashankar Singh, Jharsuguda Town police station Inspector-in-Charge Ranjan Bariha and a scientific team examined the scene.
Police have deployed a sniffer dog and forensic personnel to gather clues and identify the suspects.
The SP said police were making all-out efforts to trace the burglars and recover the stolen jewellery, and expressed confidence that the suspects would be arrested soon.
