Cuttack: With the arrest of a domestic help and her son here late Thursday night, city police Friday claimed to have cracked the heist of Rs 40 lakh from a doctor’s house at Balikuda near here August 28.
Sadar police said the accused, identified as Netramani Patra alias Padma and her son Akshya Patra, who hail from Buguda in Ganjam were arrested on charges of robbing `40 lakh from the residence of Bibhuti Bhusan Nayak, an associate professor with the plastic surgery department of SCB Medical College and Hospital.
“We have recovered `31, 97, 850, a gold chain weighing 32.8 gram, a bracelets weighing 20.1 gram, bangles 32 gram, an electronic safe locker worth `8,700 and three cell phones from the duo,” IIC Debadutta Kar said.
ACP Nimai Charan Sethy told reporters, “Netramani had managed to get the almirah keys and removed `40 lakh, which the doctor had arranged for his daughter’s university admission.“ She had parked the cash with her son, who works in a shop at Badambadi. They had also planned to shift their base to Maharashtra, Sethy added.
Nayak reported the matter to the police after he found the cash missing. The police registered a case (304/17) under Sections 381 and 34 of the IPC and begun probe.
Police zeroed in on the accused after tracking their phone. “Staffers of the hospital run by the doctor gave their mobile numbers except accused Netramani, who claimed her phone was dysfunctional. She was seen continously speaking to her son over phone which intensified our suspicion on her. They’ve confessed to their crime,” Kar said.
