Raurkela: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has begun constructing a 3.2-km reinforced cement concrete (RCC) boundary wall along the Dumerta railway corridor as part of preparations for its proposed expansion, which aims to increase hot metal production capacity from 4.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 9.8 MTPA at an estimated cost of Rs 30,000 crore.
The project includes an 8-km double-line railway link between RSP and Dumerta railway station to facilitate the movement of raw materials and finished products. The additional line is expected to ease congestion at Bondamunda junction and improve logistics efficiency.
The proposed alignment passes through Barkani and Dumerta. Construction of the boundary wall recently commenced with support from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and state police. Earlier, on August 24, 2026, RSP completed a 10.354-km RCC boundary wall, securing around 1,200 acres of land at Jharmunda and Barkani. More than Rs 21.72 crore was paid in compensation to 524 families relocated during the construction.
Contractual employment was provided to 222 people, while residents of 323 hutments were shifted to transit accommodation or other locations. Meanwhile, infrastructure development at a site near Deogaon is progressing, with roads, electricity, water supply and drainage facilities being developed to accommodate the relocated families.
