Rourkela: The Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) authority Thursday suspended another senior official of the plant for his alleged involvement in the gas mishap that claimed four lives at the plant Wednesday.
The suspended employee was identified as Assistant Manager (Safety) Smruti Ranjan Sahu. RSP CEO Dipak Chattaraj released the suspension order against Sahu, Thursday.
Meanwhile, two Deputy General Manager (DGM) rank officials – Gopabandhu Barik of EMD Department and Nabendu Das of CCD Mechanical Department – have been suspended over the mishap.
Notably, at least four workers died while undergoing treatment at hospital and six others got severely intoxicated following a gas leakage at coal chemical department of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
The unfortunate incident occurred at around 9.45 am, Wednesday.
According to a source, the gas leakage has claimed four lives so far while several others are in critical condition and undergoing treatment at the RSP-owned Ispat General Hospital (IGH).
The four deceased were identified as Ganesh Pailo, Abhimanyu Saha, Babu Panda and Rabi Sahu of a construction company. The workers who were engaged in maintenance work at the RSP suffered from Carbon Monoxide gas leak on its premises.
Six more intoxicated workers fell sick in the RSP campus and have been kept under ventilator support. Reason behind the gas leak mishap has not yet been ascertained.
