Bhubaneswar: With a view to creating environmental awareness, Bhubaneswar municipal corporation has launched ‘Safe Bhubaneswar drive’ to educate the residents of the city.
The drive will help educate people against use of chemical colours, and in maintaining cleanliness in and around the puja pandals and immersing idols in temporary ponds instead of rivers.
As several devotees visit the puja pandals, the BMC officials are trying to ensure that sanitation is taken care of. The BMC is closely watching the preparations by regularly visiting pandals.
“We are monitoring the preparations. Senior officers are visiting pandals to inspect preparations and are submitting their reports on a daily basis,” said Mayor Anant Narayan Jena.
BMC will also put up hoardings and banners at puja pandals to create awareness. The corporation will also open 40 kiosks with the help of volunteers near large pandals at Rasulgarh, Sahid Nagar, Patia, Nayapalli, Baramunda and Jharpada for the same.
This time BMC will build five temporary ponds instead of three built last year, as there are 180 puja pandals in the city this year. Officials said they will place polythene so that the water does not spill into the river.
The municipal corporation will also repair potholes and cover the drains with slabs in all the 67 wards for which it has sanctioned `5 lakh for each ward.
