Cuttack: A 22-year-old salesgirl committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of a store in a shopping mall at Bajrakabati area under Mangalabag police limits here Friday.
The deceased was identified as Ranjita Mohanty, a resident of Jholasahi Bharatpur area under Purighat police limits. Ranjita worked as a saleswoman in the shopping mall for a year.
According to sources, when a staff of the mall went to the store room he found it locked from the inside. He knocked at the door several times, but none responded. Subsequently, he forced his way inside the room and found Ranjita hanging by a scarf from the ceiling.
On being alerted, police reached the spot and seized the body. They registered a case (1608/18) of unnatural death and sent the body for an autopsy.
Notably, Ranjita was in a relationship with a youth from Rajabagicha area under Badanbadi police limits. However, the relationship broke up compelling the man to commit suicide earlier. Police suspect that this could be the reason why Ranjita took the extreme step.
