Baliguda: In and around the Baliguda town police limits of Kandhamal district, smuggling of sand and stone pellets has assumed alarming proportions, sources said.
In order to put a check on such kind of illegal activities, the Baliguda tehsildar, Kshirabdhi Tanaya Sahu, has come forward and imposed heavy penalty on smugglers and seized seven tractors loaded with sand Sunday.
It is learnt that around Rs 1 lakh 40 thousand was collected towards penalty from the owners of seized tractors. Many of the tractor owners are involved in smuggling of sand and stone pellets in Baliguda area, thereby causing huge loss of revenue.
Reacting to this, the Baliguda tehsildar said, “We have become tough on the smugglers and started conducting raids. Such raids will also continue in the future days.”
