Sans oxygen support, 2 breathe their last at DHH

Kendrapara: Two patients died at the district headquarters hospital here in the last three days reportedly due to lack of oxygen support at the hospital.

Sk Abdul Muktadar (57), a resident of Jaipura, was rushed to the hospital April 13 night as he had breathing problem and chest pain. He required oxygen support but the oxygen cylinders at the hospital were allegedly empty. Due to delay in treatment and lack of oxygen support he breathed his last on the hospital bed.

Likewise, Sayed Nurul Hassan (64) of Fakirabad was admitted to the hospital by his family members after he complained of breathing problem April 12 night. He met a similar fate as doctors failed to save his life due to lack of oxygen support.

Tension prevailed on the hospital premises Thursday with the family members of the deceased and locals creating an uproar holding the hospital authorities responsible for the deaths.

Town police brought the situation under control. The family members of the deceased persons later lodged FIR against the doctor and para-medical staff. The police started a probe into the matter.

CDMO Dr Binay Prusty said he has directed ADMO (medical) Dr Harihar Panda to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit a report.

Panda said as per inquiry, the doctor took all necessary measures to provide treatment to Hassan, but the latter died. In case of Muktadar, the doctor advised oxygen support to the patient, but the cylinder kept in the ward was empty. Later, a full oxygen cylinder was brought from the nearby ward but it burst while a para-medical staffer was opening it. The patient died due to heart attack.

Panda refuted the allegation that the patients died due to lack of oxygen support and claimed that in every ward two filled oxygen cylinder were kept.   PNN
