Sarjubala enters quarters

Jauna Murmu of Odisha advanced into the women's 400m hurdles

Jakarta: Former world silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi advanced to the quarterfinals but veteran Manoj Kumar was ousted in the second round of the Asian Games boxing competition here, Sunday.

Sarjubala, competing in the flyweight 51kg category, defeated Tajikistan’s Madina Ghaforova 5-0 in a bout which was more gruelling than what the score-line might suggest.

However, Manoj went out in the round of 16 after being bested by Kyrgyzstan’s Abdurakhman Abdurakhamanov in the welterweight 69kg category.

Anu, Jauna advance

Asian championship silver medallist Anu Raghavan kept herself in race for a maiden Asian Games medal by qualifying for the final of the women’s 400m hurdles final here, Sunday.

The 25-year-old from Kerala was third fastest in Heat 2 and also overall third with a timing of 56.77s. Joining her was compatriot Jauna Murmu (59.20s) of Odisha as the last best loser.

Anu had won a silver at the Asian Championships took place in Bhubaneshwar. Bahrain’s Oluwakemi Adekoya was the fastest woman, who clocked 54.87s and was followed by Vietnam’s Quach Thi Lan.

India lose to Taipei

Indian men’s team lost narrowly to Chinese Taipei in a group III match of the Handball competition at the 18th Asian Games here, Sunday. India, who had earlier defeated Malaysia and Pakistan in group III, lost 31-35 to Chinese Taipei.

India were 12-15 behind after the first half and scored 19-20 in the second half to lose the contest narrowly. Davinder Singh was the highest scorer for India as he logged 10 points.

India will next face Indonesia in the last group match, Wednesday.
