SC asks state to enquire about 2007 Kandhamal riots victims

New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) Tuesday directed the state government and the petitioner to enquire whether the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has submitted any report regarding the 2007 riots in Kandhamal district.

A two-judge bench of apex court comprising Justice UU Lalit and Justice Indu Malhotra also asked the state government to submit whether they have enquired about the victims of 2007 violence.

The SC has asked the state to submit the replies within three weeks.

Notably, a petition had been filed in the court by Archbishop John Baruwa seeking additional compensation to the victims of 2007 Kandhamal riots.

Earlier, the state government had filed an affidavit in the court stating that it was disbursing additional compensation to the victims. As many as 353 victims are yet to be paid additional compensation. The state government had also mentioned in the affidavit that the August 2, 2016 apex court order relates to the Kandhamal riots occurred in 2008 and does not relate to the violence which occurred in December 2007.
