New Delhi: Acting on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by an activist from Odisha on the ongoing agitation by lawyers and the suffering of the litigants, the Supreme Court (SC) Thursday observed that the issue might be resolved soon.
An activist from Odisha had filed the PIL in the SC seeking the apex court’s intervention to end the lawyers’ strike and restore the process of administration of justice in the state.
The counsel appearing for the petitioner Thursday sought early hearing on the matter saying that the litigants are suffering due to the agitation. However, a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed him to wait while observing that ‘the issue will be resolved soon’.
Notably, a petition was filed by Pradeep Biswal in the Supreme Court seeking a comprehensive mechanism for governing the conduct of the lawyers of Odisha.
The petitioner prayed before the bench to issue directions to stop strikes immediately and let the judicial system work smoothly in the interest of the already suffering litigants. It further requested the apex court to issue directions to the chairman of Odisha State Bar Council and Odisha High Court Bar Association to stop agitation immediately and let the judicial system work smoothly in the interest of the suffering litigants.
Notably, the functioning of courts in Odisha crippled since August 28 after lawyers boycotted work protesting the assault on one of them by four policemen. The lawyers alleged that no action was taken against the accused police personals so far.
