Bhadrak/Baripada, May 2: At least seven persons, including two women died and five others were critically injured in two separate road accidents in Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj districts, police said Saturday.
Four tourists from West Bengal were killed and five others injured when the jeep they were aboard hit the railing of a bridge at Chingudipur in Dhamnagar police station of Bhadrak district in the wee hours of Saturday, Dhamnagar inspector-in-charge Bulu Munda said.
Reports said nine persons of two families belonging to Bankuda Nuanpada area of the neighbouring state had gone to Puri in a Bolero Thursday night. After having darshan of deities in Puri, the tourists were returning home Friday evening.
The accident took place at Chingudipur Chhak on the national highway No.5, when they were returning to Sankharipada under Digha police station in the neighbouring state after visiting Puri when the mishap took place, according to police.
Driver Parambir Karmuka (40) and Supriya Daipa (48) died on the spot while Niranjan Das and Manju Choudhary (25) succumbed to their injuries at the district headquarters hospital.
Satyam Daripa (9), Arijit Choudhray (4), Pritam Daripa (17), Kanika Das (45) and Goutam Daripa (54), who sustained grievous injuries, were initially admitted to the district headquarters hospital but later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Their condition was stated to be serious, police said.
Locals alleged that Dhamnagar police reached the accident spot three hours later. Meanwhile, the relatives of the injured and the deceased from Kolkata and Balasore have reached the hospitals.
In another mishap at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district, three tribal youths were killed on the spot on NH-5 near Tarakati village under Betanati police station Friday evening when their motor-cycle collided head-on with a truck, Betanati SDPO Dhiren Chandra Nanda said.
The youths from Baura village under Morada police station were on way to Dantiamuha to attend a marriage ceremony when the mishap took place.
Four bodies of the tourists were handed over to their relatives after postmortem.
