Shop catches fire in city

Bhubaneswar: A major fire broke out at a computer peripheral store at MN Market Complex near Ravi Talkies in Lingaraj police limits here Friday.

According to fire services personnel, there was no loss of life. “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of short-circuit. Though exact loss of property is yet to be ascertained, initial assessment claims assets worth Rs 5 lakh have been reduced to cinders,” they said.

Sources said the fire broke out on the ground floor of the market complex around 9.45am when owner of Jagannath Cartridge Bipin Martha was on his way to deposit cash at a private bank at Bapuji Nagar.

Other shopkeepers spotted thick smoke emanating out of the store and alerted Kalpana fire brigade personnel. “As soon as we spotted the smoke, we alerted fire officials who reached here in no-time and managed to contain the flames within an hour,” said a tailor, who owns a shop at the market complex.

“I have started the shop with Rs 500 around nine years ago. Now, the fire has left the setup shattered,” an ill-fated Martha told Orissa POST.
