Shraddha feast in Bhubaneswar turns out to be COVID-19 superspreader event

Bhubaneswar: Taking part in a feast organised on occasion of a shraddha ritual at Kancha Sahi near Kapliprasad area in Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) limits has proved costly for many as 16 persons as all of them tested positive for COVID-19 Saturday.

The shraddha feast being the source of the spread of the virus came to the fore after BMC carried out the contact tracing of patients.

According to a source, a resident from Kancha Sahi held the shraddha of his father July 28. On this occasion, he organised a feast and invited his friends and relatives. Few days later, the person in question developed COVID-19 like symptoms like cold and fever.

He got his samples tested and the report came out to be positive for coronavirus Thursday. He was shifted to COVID-19 hospital Friday. Samples of those came in contact with the person were collected and 16 of them tested positive for the virus Saturday.

At a time when Khurda district is reporting more number of positive cases than Ganjam, this incident has turned out to be a headache for BMC.
