Bhubaneswar, Dec 14: A four-day solo exhibition of works by artist Geeta Biswas got under way at the Lalit Kala Akdemi here Thursday. The exhibition themed ‘Celebrating Life’ has 38 works by Biswas, each depicting a different shade of life. The works have been done in acrylic, oil and water colour. One of the paintings, ‘The eternal Quest for Happiness’, depicts a soul’s search for happiness — it is shown as treading a path strewn with flowers; but as it steps on the flowers it is pierced by thorns. According to Biswas, the search for eternal, limitless happiness is like running after a mirage in a world of limitations. ‘Freedom is subjective’ is another
piece on show. It shows freedom as different beings see it through three birds. Each bird is tethered but reacts differently to the restraint: One is unconcerned, the other is trying to break free and the third has broken its restraint and is free.
The painting ‘Four Classes in the World’, in turn, depicts the chaturvarnya system, while ‘The Melting’ which shows nature as a couple — a tree and its leaves. According to the artist, the painting shows the tree trying to hold on to all its leaves, that is, life in its arms, but gradually “all of it is melting”. For Biswas, this is her first solo exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi. The self-taught painter is partial to water colour, although she has worked on oil and acrylic depending on subjects. She has to her credit several exhibitions abroad such as in the UK. She has also exhibited works in the city in the past. The exhibition was inaugurated by Paramita Mahapatra, the MD of UMSL and Rajesh Kumar DIG CRPF.
