Debagada: Six students were allegedly assaulted by their seniors in a ragging incident at the hostel of PM SHRI Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) at Sunamunda in Debagada district, leaving them injured, police and school authorities said Thursday.

According to a complaint, a group of Plus Two students allegedly summoned Class IX and X boarders to their hostel late on the night of July 14 and assaulted them with cricket bats, belts and slippers.

One student sustained an eye injury, while the others suffered multiple bruises and visible injury marks.

The victims reportedly remained silent out of fear and did not report the incident immediately.

The alleged assault came to light only after teachers noticed an eye injury on one of the students and questioned him.

The school subsequently informed the parents. The parents have questioned how the alleged late-night assault inside the hostel went unnoticed by the school authorities until the injuries were detected.

The parents and guardians lodged a written complaint at Debagada police station.

Based on it, police registered Case No. 349/26 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against nine Class XI and XII students and launched an investigation.

School Principal Uttam Prasad said the nine accused students have been sent home pending further action.
