Smart parking plan in City on the anvil

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Smart City project is mulling one-of-its-kind advanced ‘On and off smart parking plan’ to get rid of traffic congestions in the Capital city.

A  Bengaluru-based firm along with Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) authorities has proposed to set up advanced parking systems at about 87 points in the city. These systems are reported to have modern parking gateways, sensors and mobile-point of sale. The project is set to be rolled out in the coming six months.

“We will soon identify the locations based on areas with regular traffic snarls and set up these latest parking systems. Once finalised, citizens will have the convenience to find and reserve a parking spot even before stepping out of their homes or offices,” explained a BSCL official.

Detailing about the payment process, the official stated that once a person reserves a particular parking space he/she will be charged on hourly-based charges and the payments can be done through approved mobile-point transaction at the parking stations.

According to a BSCL report of 2017, about one lakh vehicles, excluding two-wheelers, were registered in the year. The number was expected to double in the next two years. Thus the plan can give great relief to the city’s population that is fed up with rising traffic congestions that have become a common feature due to illegal car and motor vehicle parking on roadsides.

“I spend about 15 minutes every day searching for space to park my car. At times I have to leave my vehicle on road because there isn’t any designated parking space around the vicinity. If this system gets executed it will save a lot of time,” said Bapan Mohapatra, who runs a shop at Nayapalli.
