Angul, May 19: Making a mockery of modern healthcare system, a sorcerer was found applying black magic on a nine-year-old snake bite victim in the district headquarters hospital despite the presence of doctors, hospital staff and onlookers, Tuesday.
The incident triggered sharp resentment among people here.
The victim Tapaswini Sahu, daughter of Bipin Sahu of Natada village under Angul police limits, was rendered critical after a poisonous snake stung her in sleep Monday night.
The sorcerer went on with his practice in the hospital while doctors, hospital staff and onlookers silently watched the whole act.
They even did not made slightest effort to send the sorcerer away while he continued applying black magic on the girl in presence of her parents.
However, no improvement was noticed in her condition as she was heavily gasping for breathing because of suffocation. The doctors even did not try to attend her or shift her elsewhere.
Sources said the girl went to sleep after dinner but did not wake up in morning for tuition. Her father tried to woke her up and found her writhing in pain with eyes closed and froth oozing out of her mouth. They found her unable to stand up and immediately carried her to a sorcerer.
There the sorcerer informed them of her snakebite and tried to cure her, but in vain. Later the family members admitted her to the district headquarters hospital at about 11am.
There the doctors conducted her check-up and administered her injections and saline. The girl lay on the floor writhing in pain with her condition showing no sign of improvement till 5pm.
When the parents met the nurse on duty and enquired from her about their child, she told them that the doctor has advised to shift the girl to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack and asked the poor parents to make arrangements for shifting.
The fact that the doctor instead of personally advising the girl’s parents to shift her to Cuttack and only mentioned it in the report and the nurse kept mum till she was asked about it triggered sharp resentment among other patients and their attendants.
Shocked, the girl’s father then called up the sorcerer and made a last ditch attempt to save her daughter. The sorcerer chanted mantras and was bit the girl’s hand but her condition further deteriorated till reports last came in.
