Soro: A Class X student of Purubai Kanyashram here died and 26 others were admitted to Balasore and Soro hospitals owing to suspected food poisoning that has taken the kanyashram inmates into its grip.

Locals alleged laxity on the part of the authorities of the kanyashram situated in Soro Municipality area and that they started acting only after three days of the disease afflicting the kids.

As per reports, the authorities took up the matter seriously after three of the students become critical, suffering from diarrhoea and severe headache. Finding that the situation is getting out of their hands, two of the children were shifted to Balasore hospital, while Rubina, a Class X student from Nilagiri, succumbed to the ailment late Friday night.

Preliminary investigation indicates ‘food poisoning’ as the reason behind the incident. However, they are yet to ascertain the exact reason.

On being informed, a team of Child Welfare officials from Balasore along with some doctors rushed to the spot and admitted the 27 children to Soro Community Health Centre (CHC).

As per the latest reports, 26 children including Mama Singh, 6, Sita Hansdah, 6, Srimanti Singh, 13, Gayatri Ghadai, 12, Subhashree Behera, 14, Pujarani Giri, 15, Bini Das, 12, Gita Singh, 8, Pani Majhi, 6, and Radha Singh, 7 are undergoing treatment at Soro CHC.

CHC superintendent Satyanarayan Nayak along with his team is now treating the ailing children.

Soro Mayor Municipality chairman Madhab Dhada and deputy chairperson Sasmita Das visited the hospital to take stock of the situation.

Notably, the Kanyashram was also in news in January 2019, when a girl student was found dead and another was rescued in critical condition.

The deceased was identified as Hemjani Hansda, daughter of Lal Hansda of Kumarpur village while the girl who was recovered in critical condition is Saraswati Mallik.

According to sources, some students of the kanyashram spotted both the girls lying in suspicious conditions and informed the matter to the school authorities.

A preliminary probe found no external injuries. Some of the other inmates suspected that the girl might have died due to snakebite or food poisoning.
