Bhubaneswar: A driver was arrested after a helper was killed when a speeding truck rammed into a stationary goods vehicle while the victim was fixing a tyre near the Tamando overbridge on NH-16 under Tamando police limits, officials said Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Manoj Bira, a helper of a pickup truck bearing registration number OD-02-BQ-7545.
According to police, the incident took place around 3:10 am April 20 when the brick-laden vehicle was travelling from Bhubaneswar to Khurda.
Its rear tyre burst near Tamando, following which it was parked by the roadside.
While Manoj was changing the tyre, an Eicher truck bearing registration number RJ-14-GP-5614 allegedly came from behind at high speed and rammed into the pick-up vehicle.
Manoj sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot.
Police said the impact was severe, leaving the body badly mutilated. The body was later shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar for the necessary formalities.
Based on a written complaint, Tamando police registered a case and launched an investigation.
The accused driver, identified as Dharmendra Kumar (40) of Bahalpur under Rura police station in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested during the probe.
During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to his involvement in the incident.
Police have seized both damaged vehicles involved in the accident. Further investigation is underway.
