Staff quarters to be shifted from NZP

Bhubaneswar:  To ensure an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity for the animals, the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) authorities have decided to relocate the staff quarters built inside the park.

The NZP has built 72 staff quarters in 18 barracks, which are at their last stage of construction. The decision came in the backdrop of the rules enlisted by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) that no human establishment should come up inside a wildlife zoo.

According to rules, the wild animals at the zoo should be left at peace during night and no humans should be allowed to make any commotion inside the park. During day time as the animals get disturbed due to large numbers of visitors, they should be left alone after sunset, to create an environment of jungle where nobody disturbs them.

At present, as some workers are residing in the NZP staff quarters, it is feared that their presence would disturb the zoo inmates. However, the zoo authorities have decided that except the watchmen no workers shall stay in the park after it is closed in the evening. So, the zoo administration has built new quarters near the NZP for its staff.

On being asked, NZP Director Sisir Acharya said, “According to CZA’s rules, no employees should reside inside the zoo premises. So, separate accommodations are built by the zoo administration outside its premises. The zoo employees will be shifted to the new houses within this month.
