Durga Priyadarshini, Founder and Managing Director of Gaumaya Paints, began her journey as a homemaker with a vision to contribute meaningfully to society and the environment. In 2020, while exploring opportunities in dairy farming, she realised that although milk was valued, cow dung—despite its immense potential— was largely overlooked. This realisation inspired her to transform what was often considered waste into a valuable, eco-friendly product. Today, Gaumaya Paints stands not just as a paint company but as a mission dedicated to supporting farmers, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable living. Her journey has been strengthened by the unwavering support of her family and her belief that powerful innovation can emerge from simple rural resources.

What inspired the idea of manufacturing eco-friendly cow dung paint, and how did the concept evolve into a scalable business?

The inspiration came from a simple observation during my dairy training. I saw farmers struggling because old cows generated little income, while cow dung had very low commercial value. I wondered if it could become a high-value, eco-friendly product. After extensive research and experimentation, we developed sustainable paint. By building a supply chain with rural farmers, we not only manufacture paint but also support a rural ecosystem by purchasing cow dung and creating additional income for farmers.

How does Gaumaya Paints differentiate itself from conventional and other eco-friendly paint brands? What R&D efforts went into developing a product that lasts up to 15 years?

Our key differentiation lies in blending traditional knowledge with modern technology. Gaumaya Paints offers natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties from cow dung, breathable coatings that reduce dampness, and low-VOC, toxin-free formulations. Our paints provide durability of up to 15 years. Achieving this required extensive R&D, with multiple trials to perfect formulation stability, adhesion, and weather resistance. Through continuous lab testing and field feedback, we ensured eco-friendly paints deliver performance equal to or better than conventional paints.

How do you address consumer skepticism about cow–dung–based paints in urban markets?

Initially, many customers were surprised by the concept of cow dung paint. However, once they see its finish and performance, their perception changes. We address scepticism through live demonstrations, sample applications, scientific explanations of the processing technology, customer testimonials, and real project references. When people understand that the material is hygienically processed, their hesitation fades. Today, many urban customers prefer it for its safety and eco-friendly benefits.

What challenges does the eco-friendly paint industry currently face in terms of awareness, regulation, or scalability?

The eco-friendly paint industry faces challenges such as limited customer awareness, price sensitivity, fewer policy incentives, and difficulties in scaling raw material collection. However, these challenges also present opportunities as demand for sustainable products continues to grow. To support this sector, greater awareness campaigns, green product incentives, standard certification support, and government procurement initiatives are needed. With stronger policy backing, eco-friendly paints have the potential to become a mainstream category in the future.

What is Gaumaya Paints’ long-term vision — national expansion, exports, or product diversification?

Our future plans focus on expanding our distribution network across India, entering international export markets, and developing more sustainable building materials. We also aim to strengthen our R&D capabilities and create greater livelihood opportunities for farmers. Our vision is to make Gaumaya Paints a powerful example of how rural innovation can drive meaningful impact at the national level.

What motivated you to enter this industry as an entrepreneur, and what advice would you give to those aspiring to build a successful venture in this field?

My biggest motivation was to prove that even a homemaker with determination can build something meaningful. Although I did not come from a technical background, I had the courage to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward. My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to start with a purpose, not just profit, and be prepared to face failures while continuing to learn. Focus on solving real problems, build a strong support team, and remain persistent. Success comes through patience, consistency, and strong belief in one’s vision.
