Bhubaneswar, May 3: The state government has started the development of an airstrip in Malkangiri to improve connectivity to the Maoist-affected district.
Land acquisition will be started soon, an official of general administration department said.
Work on the project will start soon after completion of the land acquisition.
The government has taken up the project on a priority basis, the official said, adding that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would lay the foundation stone for the airstrip soon.
With the development of this airstrip, there will be two air destinations in the Koraput-Bolangir-Kalahandi (KBK) region.
The state has already initiated the process of making Jeypore airstrip a full-fledged airport.
The state government has already requested the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to provide technical and financial support to make it a full-fledged airport.
The Koraput district administration has identified 445.52 acres of land for expansion of runway and other infrastructure, said the official.
