Examinations are a crucial part of the curriculum and the main cause of stress for many students. In order to avoid crippling anxiety from these pesky evaluations, it is important to approach examinations with a clear mind and an understanding of how to deal with stressful situations more broadly. In many instances, exam stress is all in the mind, and mental discipline is a large part of what is needed to succeed. Many students feel that during exam preparation after studying for long hours you need to relax. It boosts energy and brings back the wish to sit for study again. Orissa POST chats with students about how they handle stress during examinations.

Twinkle Das has recently completed a course in nursing. Besides her career in nursing, she also lends voice to albums and films. Dwelling on how she manages stress during an examination, the youngster says: “I love singing. So, to manage stress during an examination I sing in order to feel relaxed. I study for long hours before an exam but after a while I feel that despite optimum concentration I am missing out whatever I am reading. At that point I feel it is time to relax. I should do something, I feel, that should not be related to study; it should ideally be something far away from the academic world. Since I am a singer I sing to relax. I sing loudly to relax and get into the skin of the song. For some time I forget that a few minutes back I was preparing for the exam. After sometime I feel recharged and get back to studies. Besides singing, I also chat with my family members to relax.”

Mahesh Soni is a student of computer hardware who lives in Bolangir. He takes out his bike and wanders for a while to relax during an examination. He says: “My study includes both theory and practical. Of course, I enjoy my studies and hence can prepare for the examination for long hours. But at times I need a break especially when there is a power cut as I dislike preparing under an artificial bulb powered by an inverter. In such situations I just take out my motorbike from the garage and wander around town. During the trip I come across friends and get a chance to talk to them on different funny subjects. Talking with friends on academic issues doesn’t provide relaxation. Rather we discuss about something which I should not reveal. I mean I am shy of revealing, but I believe that is the best way to recharge oneself. So, after a heart-to-heart chat with close aides I return to my studies.”

Ipsita Mohapatra, a medical student from Berhampur, is pursuing a Bachelor’s in ayurvedic medicine and surgery. The youngster says: “I am vigorously preparing for the past five years. I applied for the medical entrance twice and got admission in the Ayurvedic College in Ganjam. However, I am still trying for MBBS. I usually take a light bite after I get tired of studies. After a brief study hour I sit in front of the TV and eat something that is purely of my choice. I don’t know why but at the time the food tastes really heavenly. The combination of my choicest food and TV serial offers me great relaxation and reenergises me to return to studies.”
