Bhubaneswar: Acting on a tip-off, the Special Task Force (STF) arrested a student leader of a party for his alleged involvement in illegal firearm trade late Thursday night.
The youth has been identified as Chinmaya Nanda Badajena.
Sources said, the STF of Crime Branch was tipped off about Chinmaya’s illegal weapon trade. To nab him, the team then laid a trap. It was when Chinmaya was negotiating the deal with a cop, masquerading as a customer, the STF team caught him and six of his associates red-handed.
At the time of negotiation, Chinmaya carried out a blank fire to show the cop in guise that the firearms works properly. The bullet shell was also seized from the spot.
The STF handed Chinmaya over to Dhauli police for further investigation and grilling. The gun is yet to be recovered from him, it was learnt.
Police sources said more than 14 cases are pending against him at different police stations and in some cases warrants were issued.
