Cuttack: An engineering student was rescued before falling prey to the Blue Whale game’s ‘death trap’ Tuesday.
A special team of Markatnagar police traced the victim, who reportedly had completed 10 tasks in the ‘suicide’ game, after one of his friends reported the matter to Orissa police and Crime Branch on social media via Twitter.
The youngster, a student of Ajay Binay Institute of Technology, Cuttack had allegedly finished 10 stages of the game and was on the verge of suicide when timely counseling from friends saved him.
Sources said the third year engineering student had started playing the killer game 11 days ago. He had reportedly written ‘I am a whale’ on his WhatsApp status. “The engineering student had watched several horror films and drank salt-water as per instructions of the game’s administrator. He had also drawn a whale on his hand by using a sharp object,” said a police officer.
Later, the student was handed over to his family residing in Keonjhar. The family was informed of the development and told to keep a close watch on him. Police have refused to reveal the student’s identity.
The news of the student’s attempted suicide came to the fore when his friend Vishal Srivastav sent an SOS tweet alerting the police saying ‘‘Sir somebody’s into blue whale from your city and I need your help urgent.’’ Srivastav had also tweeted to Union information technology minister Ravishankar Prasad. Meanwhile, information and technology minister Chandra Sarathi Behera held a meeting here in this connection Tuesday and convened a Central IT experts’ meet Wednesday to discuss the issues involved.
