Cuttack: In a major breakthrough, the police have cracked the sensational case of alleged abduction of a student of Ravenshaw University here and claimed that the boy had concocted a fake story of his abduction in order to cover his unsuccessful suicide bid.
The boy attempted suicide by consuming apple seeds after being betrayed by his childhood love. When he survived the suicide bid, he thought his father would scold him if he came to know about it. Then he cooked up an abduction story, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Akhileswar Singh Saturday.
The boy, a Plus II second year science student at Ravenshaw, lives with his uncle in Kalyaninagar under Chauliaganj police limits. He had alleged that a group of miscreants forced him into a van and knocked him out when he was going to his coaching class on December 5. He further alleged that the abductors had attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon and later dumped him near Bapuji Nagar in Bhubaneswar at around 9pm.
Chauliaganj police had launched a probe after the boy’s father lodged an abduction complaint. The police had examined the footage of CCTV cameras installed in Bapuji Nagar area, but did not get any clues about the abduction.
According to Singh, the boy, who originally hails from Jagatsinghpur district, was in love with his childhood friend. They were brought up together and their friendship turned into love when they moved to high school. After Matriculation, the boy took admission in Ravenshaw while the girl stayed back in her village and continued her study in a local college.
However, ever since the boy moved to Cuttack, the geographical distance between the two had thickened his love for her. The boy often found his girlfriend’s phone busy whenever he tried to call her. On December 4, the boy had a heated argument with the girl over the issue. He was so depressed after the tiff that he had decided to kill self next day.
The boy came out of his uncle’s house on the pretext of going to coaching class at 6pm. He consumed more than 70 seeds of apples to kill himself. He learnt the technique of committing suicide by eating apple seeds from a Hollywood movie ‘The Mummy,’ Singh said.
The boy felt woozy under the toxic effects of apple seeds and tried to jump from Kathajodi Bridge. However, he changed his mind and decided to move to some unknown place. He boarded a bus at Press Chowk and reached Ashok Nagar in Bhubaneswar.
He was completely new to the place. After reaching there, he again called his girlfriend and conveyed his love for her. When she rejected his proposal, the boy cut his wrist with a blade while on call. After noticing the boy, some locals contacted the police who rescued him and took him to Capital Hospital.
After preliminary treatment, the police asked him about his identity. Fearing that his father would scold him after learning about his suicide bid, the boy lied to the police that he was abducted by miscreants, Singh said.
The boy told the police that he was on his way to coaching centre when some miscreants forced him into a van and knocked him out. They assaulted him and hit him with a sharp-edged weapon. Later, they dumped him near Bapuji Nagar at around 9pm.
The police grew suspicious and examined the call details record (CDR) of the boy. From his phonebook, the police got the number of his girlfriend and after questioning her got the truth behind abduction mystery, Singh said.
