Student union president attacks Dalit students

Bhubaneswar: Some students including the current student union president of Rajdhani College allegedly assaulted two Dalit students belonging to their rival group and hurled casteist remarks at them Monday.

The victims, Sujit Dalei and Jagdish Sithha, are Plus III Commerce students of Rajadhani College. Dalei is staying at the college hostel while Sithha is staying in a mess.

According to sources, student union president Rajat Kumar Parida and his friends came near Jagdish who was at the college canteen after the classes were over. They called him by his caste and when he confronted them they assaulted him. They also mocked him over his caste.

Dalei, who was present there had to face their wrath when he came to Sithha’s rescue. Rajat also threatened and waved a sharp weapon at them. Some students claimed that a student hailing from the Khallikote area of Ganjam left the college after he was beaten by Rajat and his group.

Another friend of Rajat was arrested for attacking Ashim, a former student of Rajdhani College, with a sharp weapon Wednesday. Khandagiri police have also registered a case (370/18) based on Ashim’s complaint.

Tension between rival student groups has increased in city colleges. Two prominent colleges in the city witnessed scuffles between various groups a few days back.
