Bhubaneswar, Feb 24: Members of two student groups of Biju Pattanaik University of Technology (BPUT) reached a compromise formula Tuesday at the Capital police station and decided to withdraw cases against each other.
The groups, from the Orissa BPUT students associations (OBPUTSA) and All Orissa BPUT association (AOBPUTA), clashed Monday night near Master Canteen following an argument on the college campus. Four engineering students, Krishna Chandra Jena, Swayam Rout, Amarendra Dhal and Dholeswar Patil were injured in a scuffle. A complaint was lodged with the Capital police station.
Tuesday afternoon a counter case was filed by a rival group at Kharvela Nagar police station. A case under section 341 (wrongful restraint) and 294 (obscene act) were booked.
“Two persons were forwarded to court from both the sides. After meeting assistant commissioner of police Tapan Kumar Pattnaik, we both decided to compromise,” said A.Subudhi, founder member of both the groups.
The tiff had started after a diploma student asked a degree student to show his identity card for verification. The diploma students were staging a protest against the authorities’ decision to conduct internal assessment examinations online. During the protests, one of the protesting students waylaid a degree student and sought his identity. “Later a group of diploma students intruded into hostels of degree students and beat them up. The two groups clashed at Master Canteen later,” said Amarendra Dhal, governing body member of AOBPUTA.
Tapan Kumar Patnaik said, “We asked both the parties not to resort to any violence that creates law and order problem. The two parties agreed not to take the issue any further and compromised.”
