Subhendu shocks higher-rated Joshi

 

Bhubaneswar: Subhendu Kumar Patra of Orissa won his fifth round match Tuesday against higher-rated Aryan B Joshi (3.5 points) of Maharashtra in the AICFB National A Chess Championships for the visually-challenged at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai. He is currently sharing joint fourth position with K Marimuthu of Tamil Nadu, with both on 2.5 points.

Among other Orissa players, brothers Prachurya Kumar Pradhan and Soundarya Kumar Pradhan played stalemate against their respective opponents.

Prachurya (four points) drew with Krishan Udupa and is now sharing second place with Ashvin K Makwana of Gujarat. Soundarya (3.5) meanwhile, played out a draw with table-topper Kishan Gangolli (4.5) and is now joint third.

Easy victory

Brilliant bowling performances Tuesday by Debabrata Pradhan (4/32) and Rajkishan Patel (3/22) helped Orissa to a seven-wicket win over Manipur and sail into the quarterfinals of the U-23 National ODI League and Knock-out cricket tournament at Kanpur.

Manipur, after opting to bat, were bowled out for 123 in 45.5 overs with MC Langlonyamba (27) emerging the top scorer. In reply, Orissa reached the victory target in just 19 overs, losing three wickets in the process. Amrit Khatua (40 n o, 49b, 4×4) batted well for Orissa.

Brief scores: Manipur 123 in 45.5 overs (MC Langlonyamba 27; Debabrata Pradhan 4/32, Rajkishan Patel 3/22) lost to Orissa 126/3 in 19 overs (Amrit Khatua 40 n o) by seven wickets.
