Basta: In a shocking incident, a sugarcane farmer died after being caught in a fire that he started at his sugarcane farm at Gilajodi village of Raghunath panchayat under this block in Balasore district Monday morning.
Kalicharan Jena, 67, the deceased farmer, had gone to his farmland in the morning. He had harvested the canes and there were only straws and dry leaves in the field. In order to get rid of them, he set them on fire but in no time the flame spread out, leaving little scope for him to come out of the fire.
On being informed, police reached the spot and seized the body for post-mortem and an investigation is underway.
