Sumit secures Inter-College chess title

Cuttack, Sept 21: Sumit Kumar Chatterjee of hosts MS Law College emerged champion in the individual category of the Utkal University Inter-College Chess tournament, which concluded here Monday. Vaibhav Mishra of SCS College finished runner-up.

Prabhat Kumar Satpathy of Christ College secured the third position, while Johnson Sahoo of Utkal University and Rajesh Nayak of Nimapara College bagged the fourth and the fifth positions respectively. All these players have qualified for for the East Zone Inter-Varsity Championship at Bhagalpur, Bihar in December.

Shailabala Women’s College took top honours in the women’s category of the team events. Emarti Devi Women’s College finished runners-up and Indira Gandhi Women’s College secured the third position.

In the men’s segment, SCS College Puri clinched the title. Christ College bagged the second position and MS Law College finished third.

Rugby tourneys

Orissa Rugby and Football Association (ORFA) announced a 12- member Orissa girls’ rugby team for the All India Junior National Girls’ Rugby Championship at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar starting Tuesday.

Sumitra Nayak has been appointed as the skipper of the team. Orissa have been placed in Pool A along with Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. The hosts will start their campaign against Chhattisgarh, Tuesday.

The squad: Sumitra Nayak, Rajani Sabar, Sony Mandangi, Basanti Pangi, Manjulata Pradhan, Lija Sardar, Jemamani Nayak, Buduni Laguri, Sasmita Moharana. Poonam Singh, Puja Senapati, Akankshya Singh Deo; Coach: Manas Kumar Jena; Manager: Dhiren Kumar Rout.

Help desk formed

In a bid to ensure smooth entrance of spectators to the Barabati Stadium during the T-20 match between India and South Africa, October 5, Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) has started a ‘help desk’ for the first time. “The desk comprising 25 members will inform the crowd about their entrance to the galleries. They will also provide other necessary information,” stated OCA through a press release Monday.

CM felicitates Bhagat
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik felicitated Para World Badminton Champion Pramod Bhagat at his residence in Bhubaneswar, Monday. Patinaik congratulated Pramod and wished him to perform better in future. Bhagat had recently bagged a gold and a silver medal in the singles and doubles events of the BWF Para World Badminton Championship in England respectively.

Referees’ exam

Four volleyball referees from Orissa will take part in a national level examination, which will be conducted by thew Volleyball Federation of India at Gandhinagar, November 2-5. They are Suparna Hira, Pravas Kumar Sahu, Anna Kerketa and Swastichita Panda.
