Sundargarh bridge collapse: Case filed against construction firm, JE

Sundargarh: A day after an under-construction bridge collapsed at Kunchapani under K Balang police limits in Sundargarh district, police Monday registered a case against the construction firm and the concerned junior engineer (JE).

According to sources, at least 30 labourers were injured after a portion of the 50-metre long and 20-ft high structure caved in Sunday afternoon. Among the injured, the condition of six is stated to be critical. Nearly 40 labourers were working at the site when the mishap occurred between 12pm and 1 pm when they were busy laying the roof of the bridge. They slipped 25ft down after a patch of the raw slab collapsed.

Police rushed to the accident site and called the ambulance service which shifted the injured to the Bonai sub-division hospital. Those critically injured have been shifted to a hospital in Rourkela.

The bridge was being constructed by a Bihar-based consultancy firm, at a cost of Rs 1.86 crore, on the road connecting Jamudihi to Kunjapani.
