Kolkata: At least 25 people, including women and children, fell ill after suspected ammonia gas leaked from an ice factory in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, police said Monday.
The incident occurred around 9.30 pm Sunday at Shapukur area in Basirhat, triggering panic among residents as the gas spread to adjoining areas, they said.
Those affected complained of breathing difficulties and other health issues, and are undergoing treatment at Haroa Rural Hospital, a police officer said.

The situation is being closely monitored and the cause of the leak investigated, he said.
A fire engine was also pressed into service Sunday to bring the situation under control, the officer said.
In protest against the incident, angry residents had briefly blocked the Berachampa-Haroa Road. The blockade was withdrawn after discussions with district administration officials.
