Vadodara: The Orissa tail which had wagged so nicely in the Ranji Trophy game against Tamil Nadu, failed to do so in the match against Baroda here Monday. As a result of which, the heroics of Subhranshu Senapati (173, 395b, 22×4) and Rajesh Dhuper (86, 179b, 8×4, 3×6) went in vain at the Reliance Stadium here.
Orissa were bowled out for 445 chasing Baroda’s first innings score of 503 all out. With a decisive result ruled out of contention the hosts’ batsmen made merry to score 259 for one when the match was called off. Aditya Waghmode (101 n o, 114b, 11×4, 2×6) and skipper Deepak Hooda (101 n o, 96b, 13×4, 3×6) both got tons.
Baroda, finished the game with three points for obtaining the first innings lead while Orissa got one. Both teams however, went out of contention for a quarterfinal berth lying fifth and sixth in the points table with just one game to go.
In the morning session, Subhransu and Rajesh had once revived hopes of a first innings lead for Orissa by putting on 150 runs for the sixth wicket. Rajesh looked like never getting out, while Subhransu accumulated runs in clinical fashion and Orissa went to lunch at 419 for five.
However, left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh (5/50) spelt Orissa’s doom after lunch as Orissa from 422 for five were bowled out for 445. In a space of 51 balls Orissa lost their last six wickets for the addition of only 23 runs and with it their slim hopes of a last eight berth disappeared into thin air.
