Jeypore: A lady gynecologist of Koraput district headquarters hospital (DHH), who had been arrested Friday by a vigilance team on bribery charges, was sent to jail Saturday after a local vigilance court deferred her bail petition to Tuesday for a hearing.
Vigilance sleuths caught Dr Sasmita Das red-handed while she was receiving Rs5,000 from a delivery patient to discharge her. She was produced in court Saturday and sent to Jeypore sub-jail after the court decided to hear the matter Tuesday.
According to the case diary, A Jyothi, wife of A Santosh Kumar of Nabarangpur district, was admitted to the hospital May 16 after having labour pain. She delivered a baby girl following a Caesarean section operation. However, the lady doctor, after four days, demanded Rs5, 000 from her relatives to open the stitches and to discharge her.
Aggrieved, Jyothi’s brother B Rajesh approached Jeypore vigilance officials. Accordingly a trap was laid and the vigilance team arrested the gynaecologist while she was taking the cash from her driver Narasingh Hantal who had earlier collected the amount from Jyothi’s relatives. PNN
