Nuapada, May 8: Wife of a teacher of Patapani village under Komna block in Nuapada district has been working as a bonded labourer to maintain her family after her husband was killed by Maoists on the suspicion of being a police informer two years ago.
Her husband Chaitanya Majhi (27) had got appointment as a shikhya sahayak in a school at Dongoripalli village. Notably, he had got the job just three months before his murder.
Their native village Patapani is situated in a remote pocket of the district which is very close to Bolangir district border. The village is surrounded by dense forest. Apart from Majhi’s family, 20 to 22 more families were also residing in the village.
But, the area was a hotbed of Maoists. In order to take advantage of remote location of the area and dense forest, Maoists belonging to Nuapada-Bolangir division had been often setting up camps in the area.
As per the claim made by teacher’s wife Padmini, someone had informed the Maoists that Chaitanya had been working as a police informer. Thereafter, the ultras had put his name on their hit list and prepared plan to kill him.
Chaitanya who had shifted to Dongoripalli along with his family after getting the job had returned to his native village Patapani to attend a wedding function February 8, 2013. While all his family members had gone to attend the marriage function, he had preferred to stay at home.
Maoists had, somehow, come to know about his presence in his house and immediately reached there. They had taken him along with them and later killed him. After a few hours, his body was found lying on an agricultural filed.
All the people including the deceased teacher’s family were completely shocked and panicked after the gruesome murder incident. All of them had apprehension that they might be targeted by ultras in future. Therefore, they had decided to leave the village.
All the families had left the village and shifted to some other villages. Chaitanya’s wife and daughter along with the members of her in-laws’ family had taken shelter at a relative’s house in Ankapur village of Bode block. Since then, they have been staying there.
But, it has become difficult for them to sustain as they have lost their properties and also the income source after leaving the village. Padmini and some of her family members are working as bonded labourers to maintain the
family
They had expectation that the administration would rehabilitate the family. But, the administration had only provided `2 lakh to them as Chaitany was killed by ultras but not taken any steps to rehabilitate his
family.
His wife Padmini had got ANM training. She had approached the administration to provide a job to her but in vain. She is still waiting for the time when the administration would help her and
provide the job.
