Kantabanji: A 14-year-old boy died by suicide after his family allegedly refused to give him money for a mobile recharge in Kulihadar village under Kantabanji police limits in Balangir district Monday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Debendra Banchhor, son of Rudraksh Banchhor.
He was a Class X student at a school in Kantabanji.
According to information available, Debendra had asked his family for Rs 350 Monday morning to recharge his mobile phone.
After the family reportedly refused to give him the amount, he did not go to school.
He later went to their agricultural field and reportedly consumed poison.
On being informed, family members rescued and took him to the Kantabanji Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead.
Police registered an unnatural death case (7/2026).
