Tension erupts as woman delivers on hospital verandah

Berhampur: Tension gripped City Hospital here in Berhampur after a pregnant woman was forced to deliver a baby on the hospital verandah due to lack of beds Tuesday.

Demanding action against the errant doctor for not providing a bed to the woman, irate family members and relatives staged a demonstration on the hospital premises. The agitation by the family was followed by BJP’s women members who stormed the hospital and demanded action.

According to sources, family members of Babuli Sahu of Jhadankuli area near Berhampur, admitted her to the City Hospital after she experienced labour pain Monday night. Instead of providing her a bed, the concerned doctor reportedly asked them to leave the hospital and go to Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital.

Although family members pleaded with him to provide a bed, he left them unattended in the hospital verandah in the winter chill. Later, Babuli delivered a baby boy in the hospital verandah, family members alleged. Even as doctors and hospital authorities passed by them, no one cared to provide them with a bed, they added.

The agitators demanded action against the errant doctor and submitted a complaint with the district health officer. They warned of demonstration if any such incident happens in future. They also demanded the doctor bear all the treatment expenses of Babuli and her newborn.   PNN
