Tiger injured at NZP

Barang: A three-year-old tiger at Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here sustained injuries when a melanistic tiger bit it at enclosure No 30 Tuesday.

According to sources, melanistic tiger Vikki attacked the three-year-old tiger, named Chinu, in the morning. Vikki bit Chinu’s right hind leg.

When some visitors informed the incident to the zoo authorities, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Ashok Kumar Das reached the spot and brought the injured tiger to the zoo veterinary hospital, sources said.

“There was a cut in one of Chinu’s veins. Our veterinarian conducted an operation on him. The injured tiger is now doing well. We are monitoring its condition,” said a zoo official.

Notably, Vikki, Chinu and Mausumi were born to tiger Manish and tigress Sneha at NZP in 2016.

At present, the zoo has 28 tigers and tigresses. Among them, nine are white and four are melanistic.
