Baripada: A three-year-old boy died and a woman suffered injuries in separate elephant attack incidents in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, officials said Friday.
A herd of 27 wild elephants from Jharkhand entered Odisha and created havoc in Karanjia forest area in the district, they said.
The deceased has been identified as Purnachandra Laguri.
The herd of elephants pushed the wall of a house, causing it to collapse and resulting in the death of the child who was sleeping inside, the officials said.
The toddler was taken to Karanjia sub-divisional hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the officials said.
In another incident in the district, a wild elephant herd attacked 18-year-old Manjulata Behera around 6.30 am.
Manjulata narrowly escaped death but suffered a serious spine injury, the officials said.
She was first taken to Karanjia hospital and later referred to Keonjhar district headquarters hospital, they said.
Forest Officer Mahabir Singh Murmu said a compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to the family of the deceased, as per norms.
Of this, Rs 1 lakh will be provided within a week, he said.
