Top teams script convincing wins

Bhubaneswar: Surgical Strikers (SS), Clouds XI and Spartans XI registered convincing wins against their respective opponents on the opening day of the Corporate Premier League cricket tournament at the SOA University ground here, Wednesday.

SS rode on a brilliant half century by man of the match Smarak Pattnaik (82, 33b) to defeat Royal Rangers by 33 runs. Chasing a victory target of 138 runs, the Rangers were restricted to 104 runs. In the second match Clouds XI’s defeated Bluetech Samshers (BS) by eight wickets. Manoj Bhadra (four wickets) and Soumya Patra (three wickets) shared seven wickets between them to restrict BS to 106 runs in 10 overs. Cloud XI rode on knocks from Pratik (47, 17b) and Rajesh Pani (60, 22b) to romp home with seven balls to spare.

The third match was a high scoring affair as Spartans XI beat Royal Kricketing Daredevils (RKD) by seven wickets. Batting first RKD scored 129 runs in their 10 overs. In reply, Spartans overhauled the target with 10 balls to spare. Debasish (58, 21b) was the top scorer for the winners.

Medals galore

Angul taekwondo players bagged 19 medals including eight gold, an identical number of silver and three bronze medals in various fight events of the Taekwondo Championship in Bhuban which took place in Angul, May 4-6.

Summer camp

Cuttack District Handball Association, in association with Rajiv Gandhi Athletic Association has organised a summer training camp at the Satyabrata Stadium in Cuttack. The camp started Thursday and will continue for a month till June.

Football tourney

Limtikira will face SL FC Belpahar in the inaugural match of the VIIth Kamlu Ping League football tournament at Gumadera in Belpahar, starting May 18. Sixteen teams divided into four groups will participate in the tournament.

After the league engagements, top four teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals. The final match will be played June 17. The champions will get a cash award of Rs 40,000, while the runners-up will take home Rs 30,000.
