Tribal family seeks DM’s help to rescue trafficked daughter

Rayagada: A tribal family Tuesday sought District Collector’s intervention to rescue their daughter, who was allegedly trafficked by a middle-man on the pretext of providing job and sold in Rajasthan.

The family urged the Collector to rescue the girl and filed a complaint with the district labour officer in this connection.

According to sources, Sunita, daughter of Geramani, a resident of Jhangilibadi under Chandili police limits in the district was lured by a couple – Mita Mahanandia and Sanu Mahanandia – to Rajasthan with the prospect of attractive wages as a migrant worker.

Unaware of their intentions, the family sent Sunita September 9, believing that she could earn well. However, the couple took her to their house at Badasahimar under Muribahal police limits in Bolangir district and forced her to work in their house for a few days.

Later, the couple took her to Baunsakela in Bara district of Rajasthan and sold her for Rs 1 lakh to a person identified as Hariyana Mehta September 22.

As the matter came to the fore, the girl’s relatives went to Rajasthan and tried to rescue her from Mehta’s clutches. However, Mehta allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh back to let the girl off.

Finding no way out, the family returned home and filed a complaint with Chandili police in this connection. But no action was taken in this regard even as eight months have passed.

Later, the victim’s mother along with local political leaders urged District Collector and labour officer to intervene in the issue. Taking the matter seriously, Collector Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar directed the additional labour commissioner to form a three-member team to rescue the girl at the earliest.
