Redhakhol: Forest officials Sunday morning rescued a tusker which had fallen into an abandoned well at Sana Hindo village under Charamala forest range under Redhakhole forest division in Sambalpur district.
The rescued tusker had unleashed a reign of terror in the areas under this forest division causing loss of lives and properties. Forest officials made several attempts to drive away the animal from the area but in vain.
According to the sources, the elephant fell into the well of Bipin Bagh in School Sahi while looking for food early in the morning.
Hearing its trumpets from inside the well, locals reported the matter to the forest department. After reports surfaced, hundreds of residents rushed to the spot to catch a glimpse of the tusker and its rescue operation.
Forest officials led by DFO Sangram Keshari Behera, ranger Pradip Kumar Sethi and his Charmal counterpart Haresh Chandra Kishan rushed to the spot and rescued the elephant with the help of an excavator.
The tusker aged about eight was driven into the jungle after its health condition was found normal. There is no let up in elephant menace in the villages under Redhakhole forest division.
Farmers are the worst affected with the pachyderms frequently straying into paddy fields and destroying crops.
