Traffic wing launches web portal to educate public

Bhubaneswar: The traffic wing of the Commissionerate Police Monday launched a web portal to educate people about traffic rules in an effort to minimise road mishaps while providing traffic personnel with cooling jackets to beat the heat and motorcycles for patrolling.
Police Commissioner YB Khurania launched the web portal in a programme held at the commissionerate’s headquarters here.
The traffic wing of the commissionerate has also taken other initiatives for the benefit of the public and the traffic personnel.
While announcing the initiatives, Khurania said, “Loss of life and property in road mishaps in India is among the highest in the world. The main impediment before us to rein in the menace of traffic mishaps is the lack of knowledge about traffic rules among the public and in order to tackle it we have introduced the website. The URL address of the website is bhubaneswarcuttacktrafficpolice.in”
Prominent features in the website are: information about traffic congestions, two sections on learning signs and symbol and rules & regulations to disseminate awareness among the visitors to the web portal.
The website also has a segment named feedback and contact form through which the public who visit the website could share their views and comments on traffic related matters.
Khurania said, “We have also made arrangements for feedback through which people can give their important feedbacks on the traffic related issues. Apart from this, students interested in joining the Students Traffic Volunteers scheme can gather the necessary information from the web portal as well as the required online application form which is also available in this web portal.”
The commuters can get the prepaid auto prices and the information about the pink autos from the web portal. In order to make the web portal more interesting, a quiz section is featured in it after each chapter. The visitors to the website can test their IQ level on traffic related matters.
Important contact numbers, first aid and how the Traffic Wing of Commissionerate Police functions are available on the website.
Khurania said, “we will try to improve the web portal after getting the feedbacks from the public.” He informed that the department was mulling some incentives for the participants of the quiz section on the web portal.
The Police Commissioner also said, “For the first time in Commissionerate Police, we have introduced cooling jackets for our traffic personnel to lower physical discomfort. The personnel wearing the jackets will feel more comfortable while doing their duty under the scorching sun. The jacket slashes around 10-12 degrees from the temperature around.”
The commissionerate also introduced an important measure to deal with the traffic congestion due to agitations during Assembly sessions. Three Variable Message Sign (VMS) display units were introduced by the Commissionerate Police. The mobile VMS units will be placed at different important locations in the city to inform the general public about the latest traffic position of a particular road. It will help people on the road blockade information in real time. The VMS will be controlled from the traffic control room.
The commissioner distributed 16 TVS Apache 160 CC motorbikes to the male traffic personnel for traffic PCR patrolling duty and also distributed the cooling jackets to the traffic personnel. The Police Commissioner along with other senior officials flagged off the new traffic PCR patrolling bikes at its headquarters.
