Cuttack: Doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital Monday confirmed that the conjoined twins of Nayagarh, Ganga and Jamuna, admitted to Shishu Bhawan, share a single heart and liver.
“The conjoined twins from Nayagarh are a rare case of abdomino-thoracopagus twins and the CT scan reports reveal that the babies share the same heart and liver,” Sisu Bhawan superintendent Saroj Satapathy told reporters.
He was also apprehensive that the single heart that the twins share is defective. He sought some more tests on the twins to draw a conclusive report on the health status of the babies.
When asked about the test, head of paediatrics department of Sishu Bhawan Dr Pradip Kumar Jena said, the conjoined twins are alive with the help of oxygen support at the ICU and their condition is still unstable. The operation for separating them would be reconsidered after three months, he added.
The twins are under conservative management and all essential supportive care is being provided to them. The twin sisters were brought to the hospital Friday within 24 hours of their birth and a team of 12 doctors was monitoring their condition.
Doctors said the chances of such births are one in 10 lakh. The team of doctors will take a call on operating the twins after a couple of months only if their vital parameters remain normal.
